Although historical records suggest that nutmeg and mace were introduced to Sri Lanka in the early 19th century, there is compelling evidence that traders may have brought them much earlier. Native to the eastern islands of Indonesia, the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) now thrives in several parts of the world, with Sri Lanka standing proudly alongside India, China, Trinidad, Grenada, and Indonesia as a quality producer.
The nutmeg tree belongs to the Myristicaceae family. It is an evergreen giant that can grow up to 20 meters in height, bearing glossy green leaves and fragrant, unisexual flowers—though rare bisexual flowers can also appear. Its fleshy yellow fruits, ridged lengthwise, split open upon ripening to reveal shiny seeds wrapped in a delicate crimson aril.
From this one fruit come two treasured spices:
Growing Regions in Sri Lanka
Nutmeg cultivation is concentrated in the mid-country regions, primarily in the districts of Matale, Kegalle, and Kandy. Around 930 hectares of land are dedicated to its production. The crop thrives best in well-drained loamy or sandy clay loam soils rich in organic matter, at elevations from sea level up to 600m.
A tropical climate with an average annual rainfall of around 2,500mm and temperatures between 20°C to 35°C ensures optimal growth. Since strong winds can damage young plants, sheltered planting sites are preferred for the first three years.
Cultivation & Harvesting
Nutmeg is grown from seed, which must be sown within 10 days of harvest to maintain viability. Seedlings are nurtured in shaded nurseries, transplanted into the field in compost-rich soil, and carefully tended until they begin fruiting—typically after 7–8 years.
A healthy, well-managed tree can yield up to 10,000 nuts annually. Fruits are harvested when ripe, split open, and processed to produce whole nutmeg and mace for culinary and therapeutic use.
